Senate Approves Bill Supporting Law Enforcement Personnel

The Senate today unanimously approved legislation that would extend the Pennsylvania Heart and Lung Act to include several law enforcement entities that are not currently protected by this important coverage, according to Senator Randy Vulakovich, prime sponsor of the bill.

The Pennsylvania Heart and Lung Act ensures that law enforcement officers who are injured on the job are paid their full salary until they can return to work.

The organizations that would be added under Senate Bill 1073 include:

  • Allegheny County Port Authority Police
  • Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Park Rangers
  • Fort Indiantown Gap Police
  • Investigative Staff with the Office of Inspector General
  • Allegheny County Housing Authority Police

Additionally, the bill would provide state universities, state-related universities and community colleges the option to provide coverage to their campus police.

“Law enforcement officers place themselves in harm’s way and deserve the protections of the Heart and Lung Act,” said Senator Vulakovich. “Passage of this legislation will provide this important coverage to these men and women.”

The measure now goes to the House of Representatives for consideration.
