In a special ceremony to honor and recognize 168 local Vietnam War veterans and their guests at Shaler Area Middle School on Thursday (April 13), Senator Randy Vulakovich offered his thanks on behalf of the Commonwealth for their service.

Senator Vulakovich and state Adjutant General Brigadier General Anthony Carrelli presented Vietnam veterans with a special commemorative pin during the ceremony.  Retired state Senator Bob Robbins, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, was the keynote speaker at the ceremony.

“Vietnam was an ugly war and our returning soldiers were not always greeted with respect they truly earned and deserved,” said Senator Vulakovich, Chairman of the Senate Veterans Affairs & Emergency Preparedness Committee.  “This ceremony was their moment to receive the recognition they deserve. The pin we presented to our local veterans is a collective thank you from a grateful Commonwealth.”

The 2008 National Defense Authorization Act authorized the US Secretary of Defense to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War and create the special pin that was presented to the veterans.
